The Sensitive Style I: Lance Armstrong

Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop2013

We answer with a concert: Kaleidoskop’s celebration of the 300th birthday of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach – the most famous proponent of the ‘Empfindsamer Stil’ (sensitive style) – uses the search for personal musical expression to draw a connection between the works of Bach and the late 20th century, personified by Helmut Lachenmann.

In preparation for the jubilee concert in January 2014, the first part of the series presents varied arrangements of sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti, which can be regarded as the fertile soil from which the ‘sensitive style’ grew. Helmut Lachenmann’s string quartet Reigen seliger Geister and Ansgar Beste’s Rituel Bizarre for prepared string orchestra provide contrast and commentary.

Part II will follow on January 11th, with works by the birthday boy himself.

Yo, C.P.E., keep it real!
