stargaze – Brooklyn to Berlin

Solistenensemble KaleidoskopLee Ranaldo2013

The collective stargaze is a production label that aims to launch contemporary music at the intersection of new music and experimental pop music.

Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth) composed a new piece for 14 strings and guitar (played by the master himself) for the Holland Festival: the piece was developed by Ranaldo, conductor André de Ridder and the Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop in a joint experimentation and rehearsal phase. In the process, Ranaldo played with song forms and different instrumental tunings, such as those used by Sonic Youth or in baroque compositions. The premiere will be complemented by Sebastian Claren's Licht a capella, written at the time for the 5th anniversary of the Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop. Also on the program is a concerto grosso after Scarlatti by Charles Avison, a masterpiece of the late Baroque, and Fuel by Julia Wolfe, a virtuosic and ceaseless rock number for string orchestra.
