Orfeo – Love will tear us apart

Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop2010

Orfeo is a play about the power and limits of music and the artist. But the opera also tells of the power and vitality of play, of the search for a lost happiness.

Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi is a myth that could well be compared to figures from our present day, such as Kurt Cobain and Ian Curtis, whose letters and diaries also formulate an artist's struggle for expression through music, for a place beyond commerce, for a pause. By extending the myth into our time and recognizing how modern the artist's problematic is in this opera, the result is a musical theater that takes the open form of baroque opera and builds a bridge from opera's beginnings to the present.

The evening develops from a raucous baroque feast as a lavish symbol of life and death, and in its course leads further and further into an inner world in which the intoxication of the game must replace the lost happiness of life, in which the hopelessness of being able to escape the power of this game becomes a certainty - Love will tear us apart.

A young ensemble of singers and the musicians of Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop will perform a work by Alexander Charim, specially conceived for the Herrenhäuser Gardens, under the direction of conductor Olof Boman. Three locations of the complex will be played: In the first part the gallery, in the intermission the garden, after the intermission the Orangery. The baroque festival, the celebration of life, the symbol of living and dying in the first part meets a modern interior world in the second part.
