Howling Wolf: Kaleidoskop vs D’Est
Within the framework of Howling Wolf: Festival for Film-Music-Performance, Wolf Kino over 8 weeks in June and July will invite musicians to explore a variety of cinematic narratives – from avantgarde silent films to contemporary experimental films. For the duration of one week each of the musicians will investigate their specific approach to the topic and to the emotionality of the films and work on their own musical-performative concept. It is not about the composition or production of music for film, but about exploring what is possible with music and sound in relation to film. The audience can observe the process, the examination and rapprochement of film and music in public rehearsals as well as it can indulge in the final performative performances.
Based on Chantal Akerman’s D’Est (From the East, B 1993, 107 min.), a film that defies any categorization, the Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop will develop its musical production for Howling Wolf.
The pictures of the film resist any simple comparison. There are no comments, no text panels, no talking heads, nor are the pictures based on the tradition of direct cinema or similar trends. D’Est is about streets, crowds, individuals, turmoil and silence… To describe the film as an experience perhaps comes closest to its essence. A moving monument that burns itself into one’s memory and does not let go, so you always want to come back to it. D’Est is a film that at the same time extremely condenses and expands space and time.
