A couple of notes from a melody, a vague feeling, then perhaps a name, a place, a smell, a season: musical memories are among the deepest we experience. In old age when our cognitive abilities often wane, music opens up the doors to our own history, even what appears to have been lost.
The musical theatre piece Dem Weggehen zugewandt (Turning towards leaving) tells tales from this unexplored land of old age, where memories can be just as real as everyday life, Now can be more important than Tomorrow, and Time, Here and the Other are very much negotiable variables.
