A Sky Like A Wall
How can we speak different languages and still communicate? How can we address our culture’s lack of capacity for dialogue? Sixteen performers from the Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop and the Dance On Ensemble encounter in the spaces of the Berlinische Galerie and create a sculpture of movement in the space of the museum.
The performance A Sky Like A Wall is the first major collaboration between the musical performers of Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop, the dancers of the Dance On Ensemble and the author, director and visual artist Rabih Mroué.
Small duets, trios and quartets made up of sound, dance and voices are arranged in a precise constellation that alludes to the story of the Tower of Babel. The spectators are invited to follow the performers through the space, continually adjusting their gaze and hearing. They can decide whether to follow the movement or stay in one place.
For A Sky Like A Wall, the two ensembles worked with Rabih Mroué to develop a process of collective authorship. Mroué created the “notebook of an unspecified colour” for the performance, which contains various scores that offer a starting point for the creation process. The notebook’s overarching theme is the story of the Tower of Babel – and the desire for dialogue across borders.
